More of the same the aim for van Klink

Christchurch’s Marcus van Klink is aiming to repeat his strong opening round performance when the second round of the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship, the ENEOS International Rally of Whangarei, gets underway this weekend.

Having no more than two stages since the off-season, van Klink pulled off one of the drives of his career for a dominant two-wheel drive win at the Otago Rally. Less than three weeks later, van Klink is looking to replicate the result at the other end of the country.

The Whangarei event is one that has challenged both van Klink and co-driver Dave Neill in the past, although they were able to record a top ten outright result last season in an event that not only attracts New Zealand’s best, but also competitors in the Asia-Pacific Rally Championship.

“We’ve had an awesome start to the season, Otago was great especially on day two, I’d really love to keep going that well at Whangarei,” says van Klink. “Whangarei has been an interesting event for us in the past, we’ve had some good results and some shockers. The North Island guys are hard to beat up there and the roads aren’t so suited to a high horsepower rotary, so we need to be on our game.”

The ENEOS International Rally of Whangarei gets underway with a ceremonial start on the Te Matua a Pohe Bridge from 5pm Friday, closely followed by two super special stages around Pohe Island. The following day, teams tackle eight stages north of Whangarei, with a further eight stages on Sunday before the ceremonial finish at the Whangarei Town Basin from 3pm.
