New Zealand Motorsport Stars shine at 2024 FIA Awards

New Zealand’s motorsport talent was in the spotlight at the 2024 FIA Awards in Rwanda, as a group of exceptional Kiwis were recognized for their outstanding achievements on the global stage. The event celebrated the accomplishments of champions across various disciplines, and New Zealanders made their mark in style.

Hayden Paddon and his long-time co-driver John Kennard secured the prestigious European Rally Championship (ERC) title for the second consecutive time, making history as the first non-Europeans to claim the honour. The duo dominated the competition with a string of consistent performances across Europe’s toughest rally events, showcasing their skill and determination. Their achievement is a testament to their enduring partnership and world-class ability in the sport.

In addition to his ERC success, Hayden Paddon added another accolade to his remarkable year by clinching the Asia-Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) with co-driver Jared Hudson. Claiming the title at a home finale event in Whangarei, Paddon demonstrated his versatility and mastery behind the wheel, further cementing his reputation as one of New Zealand’s rallying greats.

New Zealanders Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy also took centre stage at the FIA Awards, collecting trophies for their stellar performance in the 2024 Formula E World Championship. Driving for Jaguar TCS Racing, the dynamic Kiwi duo propelled their team to the Formula E Teams’ Championship, highlighting their synergy and skill in the all-electric series.

Individually, both drivers finished on the podium in the Drivers’ Championship, with Evans taking second place and Cassidy close behind in third place. Their success underscores New Zealand’s influence and prominence in all facets of international motorsport.

Although representing Poland, Roman Bilinski earned recognition for his triumph in the FIA Formula Regional Oceania Championship, a series held in New Zealand at the beginning of the year. Racing on Kiwi soil, Bilinski showcased his talent by dominating the championship and securing his first FIA title. His victory is a reflection of the strength and competitiveness of New Zealand’s motorsport scene, which continues to attract top emerging talent from around the world.

The 2024 FIA Awards were a proud moment for New Zealand motorsport, highlighting the nation’s ability to produce world-class drivers and teams who excel across disciplines. From rallying to racing, these achievements not only bring international recognition but also inspire the next generation of Kiwi motorsport talent.
