AMG Return for Joel Giddy in GT New Zealand
Joel Giddy will return to the Summerset GT New Zealand Championship aboard his Mercedes-Benz AMG GT4 when the new season gets underway at Taupo in November.
Giddy finished sixth overall last season despite missing the first round, but stringing together a handful of strong results in the second half of the season saw him end up well inside the top ten.
With his car run out of the Mach 1 Engineering squad, Giddy feels that in the later half of last season, he started to get to grips with his AMG GT4 and unlocked speed.
“I started to get the hang of it at the final round but am still learning a lot each time I get in the car. Ricky and the boys at Mach 1 have put a lot of time and energy in getting me up to speed as quickly as possible which has been great and the results were starting to show,” said Giddy.
“Some good results throughout the Championship should put us in a good spot come the final round this coming season.”
For the 2023/24 season, all GT4 cars are to be tuned to the original manufacturer specification and with consistency key to winning a championship, Giddy says getting used to the new performance of the car will be important.
“With the new BOP spec, it will be interesting to see how the cars go against each other. I have had a test at Highlands with the new BOP and its quite a bit different to drive but after a while it becomes normal. I can’t wait for the season to start, heading to Highlands this weekend to do the 6 hour in a Mercedes GT4, which will be some good prep ahead of Taupo next month.”
The 2023/24 Summerset GT New Zealand Championship will consist of a five-round series over five months commencing November 17-19 at Taupo Motorsport Park in Taupo.
