Leitch keen to continue Barcelona success in Sydney day-night GT race

Fresh off two wins in Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe in Barcelona, Brendon Leitch is focused on continuing that success in Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia Powered by AWS.

The Invercargill-born driver will have his first hitout at Sydney Motorsport Park this weekend alongside Tim Miles in the Melbourne Performance Centre Dayle ITM Audi R8 LMS GT3.

The pair will compete in a three-hour endurance race at the Eastern Creek venue, which will begin at twilight on Saturday and finish under lights.

Leitch and Miles will be part of a 14-car GT3 field, which also features a handful of Supercars stars including points leader Will Brown and dual Bathurst 1000 winner Chaz Mostert.

The forthcoming GT World Challenge Australia event continues a string of competitive outings for Leitch across the past five weekends.

Leitch made his IMSA SportsCar Championship debut in the Battle on the Bricks late last month at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and returned to the same circuit two weeks later for the Intercontinental GT Challenge season-ending Indianapolis 8 Hour.
Last weekend, Leitch returned to Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe to race with Anthony Mcintosh where they won back-to-back in Pro-Am.

Racing on the GT World Challenge Europe undercard, last year’s Lamborghini champion showed he still knows the Huracan like the back of his hand and walked away holding two trophies.

“Last weekend couldn’t have gone any better for Tony and I. It’s been a while since I’ve raced in Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe but it’s just as wild as I remember! To get two wins was amazing, especially considering it was the first time Tony and I had raced together,” Leitch said.

“Coming away with two trophies in Spain after a pretty torrid run in the USA is definitely a nice reward. Hopefully Tony and I can continue that success in the future.”

Leitch is carving himself out as a gun driver-for-hire, and after stunning several Supercars drivers at the season-opening GT World Challenge Australia round at Phillip Island, he is keen to put his endurance prowess to the test.

“Doing these longer races is my bread and butter and getting to do one at my second home, under lights is going to be pretty special,” said Leitch.

“Like all the other tracks in Australia so far this year, I’ve never raced at Sydney Motorsport Park. I’ve shown it doesn’t take me long to get up to speed and figure out right from left, so we’re absolutely going there with the intention to win.

“The key for us this weekend is just being mistake-free. We’ve had a lot of races taken away from us for silly stuff either of our own making out of our control, so it’s just about eliminating the small stuff that has big consequences. This weekend’s race isn’t part of the regular title fight so we’re just going trophy hunting.”

Practice begins in earnest on Friday with two 60-minute practice sessions. Saturday features Qualifying at 10:40am followed by the Super Pole Shootout at 1:30pm. Saturday’s three-hour race begins at 6:45pm.
