Sustainability
MotorSport New Zealand is committed to promoting sustainable practices within motorsport to help minimise and offset our sport’s carbon emissions.
We recognise that sport has a significant role to play in global climate change. Globally, we must use the platform of motorsport to accelerate the development of engineering solutions and demonstrate them to our global audience. We must inspire future generations of competitors, volunteers and engineers to engage with our sport to ensure its continued sustainability.
To achieve this MotorSport New Zealand has developed an environmental policy and is focusing on improving sustainability across all area of the organisation from the operation of the office to the way events are run. We take our responsibilities seriously and have been able to achieve the Two-Star Level in the FIA Environmental Accreditation Framework.
SUSTAINABILITY FUND
MotorSport New Zealand established an environment sustainability fund in 2021 to help offset the sport’s carbon emissions.
The sustainability fund aims to deliver environmental projects that will offset the carbon-dioxide emissions produced in motorsport. These environmental projects will vary between the purchasing of carbon credits and activities such as planting trees.
Initially, event organisers will opt-in to contributing to the sustainability fund. Future plans for the sustainability fund include rolling it out at an individual level so competitors can choose to off-set their carbon emissions for a set price.
Notably, the Sustainability Fund initiative received international recognition by being named a finalist in the prestigious FIA President’s Awards in 2023. This acknowledgment underscores the commitment of MotorSport New Zealand to championing sustainable practices and mitigating the impact of motorsport on the environment.
TREES THAT COUNT PARTNERSHIP
MotorSport New Zealand has partnered with Trees That Count, a leading environmental organisation dedicated to native tree planting and carbon offset initiatives. This collaboration is a significant step forward for the motorsport community’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
The partnership between MotorSport New Zealand and Trees That Count is a key initiative under the organisation’s Sustainability Fund. The partnership will see MotorSport New Zealand’s Sustainability Fund support the planting of trees in the communities where contributing events have taken place.
