Highlands’ Celebrates Dedicated Volunteer Pete Simmons with Milestone 100-Day Service Award

Highlands’ is delighted to honour long-time volunteer Pete Simmons with a special award for reaching 100 days of volunteer service at their race meetings.

The presentation took place on Friday morning during the Festival of Speed at Highlands, a highlight event showcasing historic and classic vehicles, muscle cars, and more on the world-class circuit.

Pete Simmons, a local from Cromwell, first volunteered in November 2013 at the very first race meeting held at the park, the inaugural Highlands 101 endurance event. Since that landmark weekend, Pete has been a steadfast presence, contributing his time and energy to countless motorsport events over more than a decade.

In that time, Pete has witnessed and supported the full spectrum of motorsport action at Highlands, including GT racing, classic cars, drifting, muscle cars, single-seaters, the Bungy Van Dash, jetboats on the lochness, and iconic competitors from families such as the Lawsons, Armstrongs, and Leitch’s. His positive attitude, unwavering reliability, and deep loyalty to the park have made him an invaluable part of the Highlands community.

Pete’s commitment extends beyond the track; his wife, Margie, has worked at Highlands since 2014, making them a true cornerstone of the “Disneyland on steroids” in Cromwell. Together, they embody the spirit and family values that define the club and the park.

“Well I haven’t been counting,” said Simmons

“I enjoy coming out and doing my bit. I am a fan of motorsport and getting close to the action as a volunteer is a great way to watch it. Here’s to the next 100 days I say!”

Josie Spillane, Highlands CEO said: ” From the excitement of that very first Highlands 101 in 2013 to the nostalgic Festival of Speed today, Pete has been there with a smile, a helping hand, and an infectious enthusiasm. Reaching 100 days of volunteer service is a remarkable achievement, and we are incredibly grateful for his loyalty and the vital role he plays in keeping our events running smoothly. He even drops Margie (his wife) off in the winter months at 5.30am – now that’s commitment and love! Congratulations, Pete—you are truly part of the fibre of this special place.”

Highlands, extends its heartfelt congratulations to Pete and thanks him for his generous contribution to motorsport in New Zealand.
