What to bring to an event

So, you’ve signed up and let the event organisers know you’re coming to volunteer, but what do you bring with you?

We’ve put together some suggestions, particularly for those working in outside roles as flag, pit lane, grid, paddock, block and service park marshals.

  • Overalls – many circuits and clubs provide cotton overalls in a highly visible colour for their marshalling staff. If your role takes you into pit lane, you may require fireproof overalls, i.e. a race suit. Again, some clubs provide or subsidise these as part of the issued equipment for their volunteers. Talk to the event organiser or your head of department to discuss what is required and/or provided.
  • Hat – sunhat, cap or beanie depending on the time of the year
  • Sunglasses or protective eyewear
  • Earplugs
  • Whistle – to get the attention of competitors or spectators
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent depending on your location
  • Waterproof footwear, ideally leather boots that won’t melt in a high octane situation
  • Spare socks
  • Sweatshirt or fleece – think layers and whether an early start or late finish is likely to be cool
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers (not red)
  • Gloves depending on time of the year
  • Small towel or scarf – to wear around your neck in hot sun or cold conditions
  • Rubbish bag – to keep your gear bag in during wet conditions
  • A change of clothes in your vehicle
  • Water and food – the event organisers often provide a packed lunch and water for volunteers, but it’s better to have too much than not enough. Don’t assume you will get time to buy food at the event.

If you have the opportunity to work at major national or international events, you may be supplied with volunteer clothing such as shirts or jackets and caps, but you should always think about what you’ll need for your own wellbeing during what can be a long day working at an event.
